summertime in ohio

ohio: july 2008

while it kept getting hotter in texas this past week, matt and i stayed cool in ohio where the temp hovered around the mid-to-low-eighties during the day. we went back to visit his family and celebrate two big events: his sister-in-law's first pregnancy and grandpa geuy's 75th birthday! we were gone from july 23rd to the 28th and it was a welcome break from work, school, and the heat! the trip started off in typical whirlwind fashion, with me working the preceeding 4 days, then staying up after my tuesday night shift to attend a certification class all day wednesday. i got home around 4pm, showered, packed and hopped in my mom's car so she could drop us at the airport in time for our 8:15pm flight. fortunately, and unlike last time, we had no delays and had a great flight into columbus. we were met at the airport by my in-laws, pat & david, who were kind enough to, yet again, let us take over part of their house for the week. thanks guys!
we stayed pretty busy:
wednesday: fly in to columbus, ohio
thursday: recover and sleep! (until 5pm), have dinner with matt's dad, steven, & his fiance, jacquie
friday: matt played soccer with miah, while i spent time with heather and pat, we finished the decorations for the baby shower the next day (see the diaper cake pics!). meet the whole bonas family and have a slumber party with my new cousins becca and katie!
saturday: baby shower in dublin, ohio (an all day event including drive time, set up, take down...)
sunday: grandpa's surprise party!
monday: lunch with the family, then back to dfw and >100 degree weather :(

thanks again to everyone who made us feel so welcome, and for welcoming me into your family so openly. we had a great time, and we can't wait to see everyone again at thanksgiving!

july book club

another month, another book! this time we read the spirit catches you and you fall down, which is (in a very general sense) about cultural and ethical decisions in medicine, though it deals specifically with one family and their daughter's story. we had a great time and got to enjoy seeing jay & melissa's new house in frisco (which is *gorgeous*) and learned that our friend's nancy & clancy are pregnant with their first child! again, i only got a few pics, and realized i have none of the mom-to-be! :( i'll have to get her next time! while the girls chatted about the book, the guys went out for dinner and then we all got to spend time together before it was time to head back home.

chopsticks

a few of my nursing school buddies and i decided we should get together with our husbands for dinner. initially we had talked about having a dinner at one of our homes, but eventually we decided dinner out was the better option. we went out for sushi and i got to try some new things. no, i'm still not a fish fan, but yes, we had a great time. i only have a few pics of jay trying to teach melissa to use chopsticks. crystal and rich were there too, though i don't have a good pic of them at the restaurant...sorry!

the loon

my friend from work, ryan, celebrated his birthday on july 6th. his fiance (my friend and coworker), carrie, decided to try to surprise him by inviting a bunch of friends to a bar in dallas, the loon, and then bringing the unsuspecting ryan there. we're still not sure whether he was surprised or not, but we all had fun. happy birthday ryan!

4th of july

july 4th 2008

we celebrated our independence this year with the whole family, but no grilling. instead we had our traditional father's day feast of chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, etc, since my parents were out of town on that sunday. the whole family got together to enjoy the food and fun, and the millers, proctors and, of course, kings, stayed around for the fireworks show in the nearby park. liv enjoyed it immensely, since she had never seen fireworks before (due to a very understandable early bedtime) and jonah was a trooper, offering to stay up late so he and his sister could enjoy the show!

a birthday party

wednesday night matt got the pleasure of hanging out with some friends of mine from work, most of which he had already met. a coworker of mine was celebrating his birthday and invited people out to kona grill in dallas, where there is a reverse happy hour (read: cheap drinks and cheap food!). we met up with people there and enjoyed the company and, of course, some ER stories with our drinks and appetizers. slowly, i think matt is beginning to get used to gruesome tales of blood, pus, broken bones, trauma, stupidity and even roaches in ears (yes, it happens) over a pizza dinner and a beer. i really love that man, and i'm so happy he loves me (still!).
