a visitor!!

mom's ohio visit

during the first part of march, i entered into a kind of funk. i was missing home, warm weather, friends, family and yes, even the sunshine! to make things worse, i was frustrated with my job(s) and so was matt. it seemed like everything was crashing down around us. it was during this time that my mom offered to schedule a visit during the middle of april -- after tax season, of course. so we made plans and i trudged through my days here in columbus. then, the friday before mom was supposed to fly in (she was coming on sunday), matt and i did some serious research and had some very constructive talks about our future. matt and i had found very sobering information about professors and the odds of *anyone* every getting a full-time position in his chosen field of study (the answer -- not good!), add to this that matt was becoming increasingly more frustrated with his less-than-stellar (read: lazy and disrespectful) students and we began to discuss the prospects of looking for jobs outside academia. and then, everything seemed to click together, and by the time mom got here two days later, both matt and i were in the best moods we'd been in since moving. luckily for us, and mom, this meant her stay was loads of fun (not that it wouldn't have been anyway). but we were able to really enjoy her visit because so much stress was gone! so, that's the backstory...but here's what we did while she was here:

despite my best efforts to find fun, social, touristy things to do around columbus, mom and i both opted for a low-key week. mom was staying sunday, april 18 - saturday, april 24 and she had just survived another "taxing" tax season as a self-employed accountant. so instead of spending the whole week traipsing around columbus, we mostly stayed at home, watched movies, enjoyed tasty foods, starbucks and each other's company. it was a lovely week! i wasn't lucky enough to be able to have the whole week off, but i did manage to swing it so i only had to work on the days she flew in, and out and the thursday in-between.

i would usually do a day-by-day breakdown, but since the week was so low-key, there isn't a ton to report (nice!). so instead, here's a list of stuff we enjoyed doing while mom was in town:

- purchased and drank the following types of alcohol: margaritas, bailey's, beer

- shopped for patio furniture for our little apartment patio. the weather is so nice right now, i wanted to take advantage of it. mom and i diligently searched at home depot, lowe's, sam's, and meijer's before finally finding the coolest rocking chairs, ever! they are wrought iron and almost look like something out of a fairy tale (and apparently they are impossible to find in texas!)

- had a ridiculous amount of caffeine in the form of starbucks

- toured the OSU campus so mom could witness the enormity of the nation's largest (by land area) university and see where i work.

- spent countless hours utilizing the awesomeness of the new rocking chairs, and sometimes, the alcohol, too!

- helped matt turn his CV into a resume, search for non-academic jobs and apply for them

- went to the franklin park conservatory and enjoyed the butterflies, flowers, and sculptures

- watched the following movies: the blind side, law-abiding citizen, fired up, cars, thank you for smoking, transformers

- enjoyed panera, easton mall and spending time together

all-in-all it was a totally awesome week, and i am very thankful that the timing was perfect. if mom would have come a week or two sooner, i'm not sure we would have been able to have as much fun. a week later, maybe matt wouldn't have felt as supported in applying for new, different jobs. of course, God's timing is perfect.

we had a wonderful week and it was a nice stay-cation for matt and i, providing a nice break from our usual routines.

thanks for coming to visit, mom! we love you!!!

a baseball birthday

sunday, april 11 matt and i were able to do something that we've never done before...
celebrate david's birthday with him! yup, on sunday, april 11, matt's step-father turned 62!!!
so how do you celebrate turning 62? by going to huntington park, to watch the clippers play some minor league ball. this was another first for me, since i'd never been to a live baseball game....what? national pasttime? uhh...you know i'm more of a football fan! and most of you who know me know that i'm not a huge baseball fan, but since it was such a nice day, and such a nice stadium, and i was with wonderful people, and the team won, i had a really great time! i think david had a good time too, since i'm pretty sure david enjoys all sports and knows pretty much everything about every one of them.
after watching the game -- and david's birthday message on the big score board -- we headed to easton for dinner at the cheesecake factory. initially, we wanted to eat outside, but no one had outdoor dining available (as in, the tables were all full!), so we had to "settle" for a tasty dinner and super-yummy cheesecake inside instead (darn!). then, to burn off some calories and take advantage of the lovely day, we strolled around outside for a while before saying a few final happy birthdays and our goodbyes.

happy birthday, david!

easter

despite having two jobs, i was lucky enough to have easter off (yay!), so matt and i headed to urbana to celebrate with his family. we actually attempted to go to church in the morning, but since i had worked the night before and matt had been up late working we both slept through our alarms -- sorry Jesus! despite this set-back, we were determined to enjoy the rest of the holiday.
fortunately, we were blessed with pretty easter weather -- the sun was out and it was one of the warmest days we'd had to date (although still much cooler than this native texan is used to - i was in long sleeves, jeans and by the end of the day, a hoodie!). after lamenting my woes of not being able to wear flip-flops, we piled ourselves and lexi into the car and started the well-known hour-long drive to urbana.
unfortunately for us, we forgot that the one highway that we usually take directly into town was closed -- completely closed. now, as if this wouldn't have been frustrating enough, the detour signs were, quite possibly, written as a practical joke. the first sign we came to said that the route was closed, but there was a detour ahead, so we headed down the street...only to find it completely barricaded and a small driveway to turn around in. so we turned around and found another detour sign pointing in the opposite direction...well, what other choice did we have? so we headed off, confused, but still happy, in the direction of an open-road detour. i should point-out at this time that there were other cars attempting to follow these signs with similar results, which did affirm that it was not just me who could not interpret the signs. after we had driven for a while, i became concerned by the lack of signs indicating which direction we were supposed to be going. luckily, about that time we saw another sign...no wait, "this doesn't make any sense, it says this route is closed and there's *another* detour?!" yup, there was a detour from the detour. who does that? so, after some choice words (sorry again, Jesus!) we continued driving in the only direction it appeared we could go. sadly for us, this landed us in london, a small city to the south east of urbana (and about 40 minutes away!). at this point, we gave up and called the family to figure out where-the-heck we actually were and how-the-heck to get to where we were supposed to be (at this point i think we were already an hour late).
once we did *finally* make it to our destination (after dropping lexi off at heather's house), the rest of the day was, thankfully, largely uneventful. we were able to eat lunch with the family, including the grandparents, and then enjoyed some time outside on the patio and a leisurely walk around the neighborhood. after that, matt and i took a nap before having to make the long, though less-eventful, drive home.
the moral of the story? don't believe everything you read!

happy easter!
