christmas!

it's true that having your own kids makes christmas even more fun.  this year we got to celebrate our second first christmas (confusing, right?), this time for little miss sammy.  while she wasn't completely into the whole thing, she was a really good trooper with pictures and presents and rearranged nap schedules and such.  noah was much more involved this year, loving the tree, the lights, the presents and, of course, the new toys after it was all said and done.  i think the whole family also enjoyed having matt home from work for a week.
the festivites started on christmas eve where we did our traditional celebration with the millers.  because the weather was getting bad (rain, sleet, freezing temperatures), we opted not to go to church for the evening and instead get the littlest kids started on their gifts earlier than normal.  we ate a delicious dinner, followed by the traditional family pictures by the tree, then started sorting gifts.  we open youngest to oldest, but made a small exception this year and let noah go before brie so all the king kiddos opened gifts in order, then all the proctor kiddos.  after that, the proctor kids went to bed (a trip made somewhat unsuccessful by olivia losing a tooth!) while our kids stayed up.  this was partially due to the fact that there was little space left for sleeping children, and because our kids tend to do worse with falling asleep and us waking them for transport, then just going to bed late.
fortunately noah and sammy were in spectacular moods and enjoyed all the commotion.  after all the gifts were opened, we loaded up and headed back to our house to tuck the kids in bed.  amazingly, we were done at my parents' house before midnight (i don't remember the last time this happened -- if ever), so matt and i enjoyed some quiet christmas eve hours to ourselves.  we opted to each open one gift, something we've never done before, then snuggled in bed for a good night's sleep.

when we awoke the next morning, we were blessed with the best christmas gift our children could have possibly given us -- sleeping in!  it was well after 9am and neither of our children had started calling for us yet, so by 9:30 i went to wake noah, as sammy had just started cooing in her crib.  we enjoyed a leisurely morning with a big breakfast of lil' smokies, eggs, and fruit before starting in on the gift opening.  as we opened our gifts, we sat by the warm fire and watched as the rain turned to sleet, then snow!  big, fat, fluffy flakes blanketed our neighborhood blessing us with a beautifully white christmas!  the only two downsides to this are that our kids are too young to really appreciate this christmas miracle (in texas), and i had to work in the evening, so driving was less-than-ideal.

the rest of the morning was spent playing, eating fresh cinnamon rolls, drinking hot chocolate, and spending time with my dad and jared -- who dropped by while letting my mom rest at home since she was feeling sick.
despite having to work in the evening, the whole day was absolutely wonderful and most likely qualifies as my favorite christmas ever.  i hope you enjoyed a happy holiday, too!

santa babies

december has been busy so far (no surprise, i know) but i'm trying to post and keep up with all of the fun things we are doing and how quickly the kids are growing.  i'm going to have to combine the posts on the kids because with working full-time, keeping up with our new larger house, and caring for our two little ones, writing two posts a month seems to have become more of a chore than a joy.  so, here goes....
sweet sammy has continued to grow and change and become more of her own little person.  she continues to give out smiles generously and has begun giggling more and more.  she now laughs at things noah does, lexi does, and when you tickle her tummy.  just this week she began mimicking our speech when we talk to her.  we typically get big grins from her while changing her diaper -- she *loves* to lay on her changing table for any reason -- and we usually have a conversation with her that simply involves saying "hiiiiiii, sammy" or "heyyy, sweet girl!"  now when i lay her on the table, she grins and makes an "AAaaaaaaaaayyyy" sound.  while it's hard to convey in text, it's the sweetest thing to hear and the grins that go with it are absolutely adorable.
she's still doing a pretty good job sleeping through the night, and still typically wakes between 7 - 8 am for her first feeding of the day.  she will wake earlier if she feels she didn't get enough to eat the evening before, though.  despite her healthy appetite and frequent nursing schedule, her last pediatrician appointment revealed that she had actually gained very little weight.  our little girl had grown two inches in length and increased her head circumference, maintaining her growth curve in both, but failed to gain very much weight.  instead of doubling her birth weight -- as is expected -- samantha is weighing in at just under 12 lbs (she was 7 lbs and 1 oz at birth).  while this is a little concerning, our pediatrician was not worried because sammy is growing taller and is doing very well developmentally (on par with a 5.5 - 6 month old).  she did recommend that we encourage her to start on solids, however, so today we tried rice cereal for the very first time.  sammy did better than i expected, but it will still take some getting used to.  guess it's time for me to start making baby food again...oh joy.
the other new thing sammy is doing is flipping herself, regularly, from stomach to back.  she had already done this several times but the frequency is increasing.  now, if she is on her tummy for any length of time i can expect that she will end up on her back.  she's also started scooting around on her stomach and it's not uncommon for me to find that she's completely changed her orientation in her crib. i'll lay her down facing one direction and i'll find when she wakes that she's turned 180 degrees in the crib and facing the opposite direction. i guess we're getting closer and closer to having two kids to chase every day.
noah continues to keep us on our toes, growing up more and more every day.  he recently decided he was done with the high chair -- or at least helped *us* decide he was done with the high chair -- when he continually chose to stand up in his chair after each meal or attempt to sit on the arm rest.  i decided that if he was going to be getting out of his chair on his own, it was probably safer for him to be doing that from the height of a standard chair.  noah has been great with the transition, although sometimes he abuses the new freedom when we are out of the room for some reason (putting something away, laying sammy down for a nap, etc.).  i am so proud of him for being so independent, but at the same time i have to wonder where my baby boy has gone?  a big boy bed, big kid clothes, eating at the table... he's so grown up!  i love the person he is becoming, though, because despite his strong will and occasional stubbornness, he is always so willing to share his smiles, his toys, his hugs, and anything he discovers as new.  he has become an excellent big brother to sammy, reassuring her when she cries and attempting to comfort her, "ok, sammy, ok, sammy!"  (it's okay, sammy) or letting us know when we need to let her sleep by telling us "shhhh."  he insists on giving her kisses before bedtime every night, and will usually attempt to tuck her in by turning on her sound machine, kissing her head (we lift him up so he can reach her in her crib), and then closing the door and telling us to "shhh."  i don't think he realizes that we feed her again before her actual bedtime :)  he also gets toys for her new while she is playing on the floor, and will even put them away for her when (he decides) she is done with them.  such a good boy :)
noah has also gotten better about identifying letters, numbers, and colors in the last few weeks.  during my maternity leave i made some alphabet flashcards for him so we could practice letters.  we only practiced a few times during the remaining weeks, but noah must have really enjoyed it because he has started bringing the cards to us and asking us to "play cards." we were reciting the letters in order and noah would repeat them back to us, but now if we ask him what comes next he can occasionally tell us the next letter!  he is very good at A, B, and C, but also typically knows that J comes after I and does well with the O, P, Q, R part of the alphabet, too.  when counting, everything still tends to be "2" but he has gotten better at understanding that 1 comes first.
the most fun thing noah has learned to do, though, is fill in the blanks while reading.  when we read books now i can read the sentence, then point to the appropriate picture and noah will complete the sentence for me.  i love how interactive story time is now!
i think that's all the fun things to share right now -- at least all the ones i can remember!  there's much more to look forward to this month though, more posts to follow!

CookieFest

we got together for the annual miller (king, childers, proctor) CookieFest on the 16th.  we were able to host at our house this year and we had a ton of fun!  the cousins all got to play together while the dads watched football (and the kids), and the rest of us worked on cookies.  and even though it wasn't ideal "CookieFest weather" (i.e. cold, fire-in-the-fireplace and hot chocolate kind of weather), the fact that it was around 70 degrees was actually not a bad thing since the kids got to play at the park across the street during the first part of the day. we had plenty of helpers to assist with putting m&m's on cookies, rolling snickerdoodles in cinnamon & sugar, smashing rolos on pretzels, and icing sugar cookies.  it was such a great time and we ended up with a ton of tasty treats!  can't wait to do it again next year....but after all the work that went into planning, baking, decorating, cleaning, etc... i'm glad we've got another year to get ready ;)

5 years!

on december 1st, matt and i celebrated 5 years of marriage.  it's is hard to believe we have already been married for five years!  it certainly doesn't seem like it's been that long since we walked down the aisle and enjoyed our hawaiian honeymoon, but it also seems like things have always been this way -- that he's always been part of my life.  i guess that means we are doing something right!
of course, the first fell on a saturday, which is one of the few days of the week that we *both* work, so not only could we not celebrate, we actually didn't even see each other all day.  matt left for work that morning around 7 am and i didn't see him until i returned from work sometime around 8 am on sunday morning.  despite that, we still managed to find time to celebrate this milestone, largely with help from my mother who agreed to watch the kids, not just once, but twice!

on sunday afternoon matt and i went out to grab some firehouse subs (something we both love), then to see Wreck-it-Ralph, a movie we had both said we wanted to see (and yes, it's a kids movie, but we did that even before having kids!), and then enjoyed a leisurely coffee at starbucks.  the weather was actually nice enough that we were able to sit on the patio and talk for a while.  now, this might sound totally un-exciting to most people but there were a few major factors at play here: 1) these are all things you can't do with kids aged 21 months and 3 months ...well, not if you really want to enjoy them, 2) we had a limited amount of time and didn't want to be fighting weekend/holiday crowds, 3) this was a typical date for us back when we were first married and pre-kids.  it was absolutely wonderful!

and as wonderful as that was, the big surprise was actually on the friday before, when matt planned a special get-away for us while my mom watched the kids.  he went to the trouble of setting the whole thing up without my knowledge with the help of my father.  i should start by mentioning that i had recently started watching a show called Fast N Loud after the kids went to bed.  if you know me, you know i have special love for two things: making things look nice and cars.  this show is about "flipping" cars -- basically taking old/beaten down cars and restoring them.  it specifically features muscle cars and hot rods, but that's not even the best part.  the garage -- Gas Monkey Garage -- is actually located in downtown dallas.  i had mused aloud several times that it would be really cool to go visit sometime, since it was so close, and see what they were working on.  well, matt listened and surprised me with a trip to the famous garage under the guise of helping my dad pick out a christmas present for my mom (clever, right?).  so when we pulled up and i realized where we were it was absolutely amazing!  unfortunately, the owner and master mechanic weren't there, but we did get to meet some other people i recognized from the show and i got to see what they are working on for their next season.  i was allowed to take pictures, but i can't post them until those episodes air....sorry!  in the meantime, you'll have to settle for some pics of the outside of the garage and such.
so, here's to 5 wonderful years of hard work and great rewards!  i love you, honey, and i'm so glad you're the reason for my "happily ever after!"

november update

wow! november has been flying by and we've been keeping busy.  in addition to making time to celebrate four birthdays this month, including matt's, we were also blessed with a visit from matt's parents at the beginning of the month, and thanksgiving celebrations just recently.  and now, of course, we're ramping up for christmas!
noah has been his same, wonderful self, enjoying every day as an opportunity to add new words to his vocabulary and learn new things about the world around him.  he continues to be an excellent big brother to his sister, often wanting to give her kisses or help us tuck her in.  we are continuing to work on letters, numbers, and colors but they still don't seem to be sticking.... guess we'll have to keep working on it :)
noah has gotten much better at identifying family members, though, and it's cute to hear him talk about people by name.  he's gotten very good at identifying my mom, "shah-nen" (for grandma sharon), and he does a fair job of recognizing alex, alia and bed ("ayex, ay-ah, ben"!).  and, even though we haven't been able to go to my parents' house as often as we used to, he actually recognizes their neighborhood and starts a repeating chorus of "papa, papa, shah-nen, shah-nen" any time we are close.  i'm amazed he can so easily recognize his surroundings!
and speaking of grandparents, noah got to show off all his knowledge when matt's mom and step-father came to visit at the beginning of the month.  they were here for halloween and the beginning of the month, so noah got a chance to play with his grandma and grandpa richards.  this typically involved playing in the sandbox, playing with cars, watching the movie Cars, or an occasional outing with the family to half-price books.  matt was not able to take time off work, but i was able to enjoy their company during my last week of maternity leave.  we were actually able to host them in our new house, so we probably got to see them more than other visits in the past, since there was no need to coordinate drive time and hotels and such.  it was also nice to have extra hands around the house, after having been solo for so many nights the last 3 months! and i know noah enjoyed the extra attention, after having to learn to share my time with his new little sister.
we were also lucky enough to be able to host thanksgiving this year in our new house.  while it was a lot of prep work and cleaning on the front end, i absolutely loved having everyone here and making use of all this space we now have.  my dad helped us set up the media room with a projector and some other A/V equipment he had and we made use of both upstairs and downstairs to spend time with family.  overall, i'd say it was a success and i really enjoyed hosting, too!
on the 25th, we celebrated november birthdays including alia, ben, matt, and my father's with a big celebration at my parents's house. we enjoyed the usual spoils: chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, etc.  and then enjoyed three different kinds of dessert.  it was fun, and very filling, especially after having celebrated thanksgiving only a few days before!

so that's most of november, i'm sure i'm leaving something out and i'm sure i always will, but at least one day i'll be able to look back and remember why i always felt so busy! i hope you are enjoying this holiday season as much as we are!

3 months

time has flown by!  it really seems like just the other day that i was waiting to know when our baby was going to arrive, and now she's already 3 months old and i'm back to work!  our sweet girl has really started interacting with the world around her and now smiles and giggles easily.  her baby laughs are the best to hear, especially on days when i'm staying up with them before i have to work that night.  and when i come home in the morning after being awake for 24 hours, those baby smiles, in addition to noah's sweet grins, make it all worth it.
right now samantha really enjoys playtime in her bouncy seat, which will entertain her for long stretches of time.  she's also a fan of the activity mat, especially when playing on her back.  she's still getting used to tummy time, it's mostly hit or miss -- sometimes she does really well, othertimes she seems to hate it.  we've also recently started putting her in the bumbo chair to help strengthen her core and give her a different view of the world.  she seems to like it, but i can tell it's a work out for her because she always seems like she's concentrating really hard when she's in it :)
and as for our transition back to the world of two full-time working parents, it's going about as well as it could.  samantha has been doing really well at sleeping through the night for the past few weeks (a trend i desperately hope will continue!), which means that the transition has been easier for everyone.  bedtimes can be tough, though, since both kids typically need everything at the same time.  i've tried to get sammy to nap during noah's bedtime routine, but only had limited success.  and originally i was bathing her in the kitchen sink during noah's dinner, but this was stressful for everyone and sam never really enjoyed her baths.  the best change to our routine probably came from the advice of a few friends who have had to weather bedtime routines alone who recommended bathing the kids together.  the first time i tried this was horrible, samantha hated the big bathtub and noah was upset because sammy was crying.  so i was holding one screaming child while another one was trying to crawl out of the tub and into my arms. thankfully my mother-in-law was here and took sammy while i attended to noah. then she saved us again by purchasing us a bath seat (essentially like a bouncy chair) that sammy can be in for bathtime in the tub.  now both kids are typically pretty happy in the tub, and i can wash one while the other plays. after bath, it's just a matter of books and tucking them into their beds.  and yes, samantha has started sleeping in her own room in the crib.  much like her brother, she seemed to prefer her crib very early on.  she had been sleeping in a pack-and-play in our room for the first few months, but one day i let her sleep in her crib for a nap.  she slept really well, so we transitioned to naps in her room from then on.  then when she started going longer between feeds at night, i moved her upstairs for the first part of the night and then into our room after she ate.  now she sleeps all night in her room, and has been since she was about 10 weeks old.  such a big girl!  i guess my kids really aren't fans of sharing a room with their parents.  i will say that it's nice to not feel like we have to sneak around our bedroom while brushing our teeth/getting ready for bed anymore.
other than that, it's just been a matter of trying to settle into a routine once again -- we've obviously had to make modifications from my stay-at-home mom routine.  everyone seems to be doing well, and i think the biggest struggle is how tired i am now :(  fortunately, my family makes me smile and even on their worst days my kids are pretty amazing.  i am so thankful to have been blessed so abundantly!

quality time with big brother

 all smiles :)
