racing into fall

it's no secret that we've had a very busy month around here.  if you've read the last several posts about our sweet little girl, you know that we've moved into our new house and have been trying to get settled in both the house and into a routine with our two kiddos.  fortunately, my maternity leave with sammy is longer than my leave was when i had noah, so i have double the time off to attempt to get everything situated.  and yes, i'm really enjoying having the time off work!  i've written a lot about samantha this past month, so now it's time for some noah updates....
our little one-and-half year old is not so little anymore.  i realize more and more very day how much he has grown and how he's less and less my "baby" as time goes by.  he now says dozens and dozens of words, far too many for me to keep track of, we typically only need to tell him what something is once and he can repeat it and remembers it in the future.  he's also recently started to put together two-word phrases and sentences.  these typically involve saying something he wants and the word "please" (i.e. "ball, ball, please, please!" or "please milk!"), but he also has surprised us recently with phrases like "my car"and "i see baby" (which i still count as a two-word phrase because he blends the "i" and "see" so it sounds like "isee bay-bee").
his other favorite thing to do and say is to call lexi.  i've mentioned before how much noah loves our labrador, and this is more evident every day.  noah now calls lexi all day, whenever he can, and will attempt to get her to play fetch with nearly any toy he can throw.  his version of her name is heart-melting, coming out sounding something like "yahtzee" :)  he will call her anytime he has to go upstairs, or any time we go outside.  at night when we tell him it's time to go brush his teeth he'll climb up two steps, turn towards the living room (where lexi is inevitably dozing), and call "yahtzee" repeatedly.  unfortunately for noah, lexi doesn't really understand his toddler speech and usually has no idea that she is being called.  this means that whomever is taking noah upstairs for bedtime had to call lexi, and noah is *very* disappointed if she doesn't join us on our walk upstairs.  it doesn't end there, though, because while noah is brushing his teeth he will go and sit by lexi, lean on her, and play "chase" with her in the loft area until his bath water is ready.  he also continues to love to feed her -- in fact i found that while i was cleaning the garage the other day he had opened her food storage container, retrieved the scoop, and dumped several scoops on the ground, which lexi was gladly helping to clean up.  needless to say, i did not have to feed her dinner that night.
the other day i went to lay sam down for her nap and i heard noah giggling hysterically in the living room, saying "toes, toes, toes!" when i went to investigate, i found noah sitting on the floor with his feet just shy of lexi's nose as she was lying on the floor.  noah would point his toes forward and touch her nose, to which her reply would be licking his feet, causing him to laugh like crazy.  eventually he would remove his feet from her nose, catch his breath, then start all over again.  of course when i tried to catch it on camera the camera became more interesting than the game...so no luck :/
other cute noah-isms include saying "bless you!" anytime anyone sneezes or coughs -- especially samantha, and including himself.  he loves any sort of stick, ball, or car.  and speaking of cars, we seem to have created some kind of monster by letting noah watch the disney movie Cars.  he will ask to watch it several times a day, anytime he sees the TV or the case for the movie.  we will hear a chorus of "watch cars, watch cars, watch cars...." until we distract him or tell him "no" enough times that he bursts into tears.  :( the hard life of a toddler!
noah continues to love to play outside, and especially loves going to the park near our house where he can swing.  my favorite part of this is that he now says "wheeeee" every time you push him on the swings.  so cute!  he seems to adore his little sister about 99% of the time, the only time he doesn't is if he's very tired or hungry and *he* wants to be held, instead of seeing us hold her.  otherwise, he loves to tell us "isee bay-bee" any time she is around, pat her tummy, stroke her hair, and point out her eyes, ears, nose, toes, etc. to us.  he also loves to tell us when she's sleeping and tell us to "shhhh, sleeping!"
we all enjoyed a visit from steve and jacquie at the beginning of the month during our move into the new house, and noah definitely loved the extra attention.  before that, we also got to enjoy the previously mentioned trip to tanglewood resort on lake texoma with my parents.  we celebrated our family's august and september birthdays while there on sunday, then i stayed there with the kids on monday and tuesday.  noah and i got to go swimming, while sammy enjoyed lots of extra cuddling by grandma sharon.  it was a nice getaway, one that we wouldn't normally get to enjoy thanks to work schedules.
we also enjoyed a trip from my maternal grandparents on september 10th, so they could see the new house and meet samantha and visit with noah.  it was great to see them, and wonderful that the kids got to see them, too!
i'm sure there are other things i am leaving out for this month, but there's been so much i just can't even try to accurately remember it all.  the important thing is that we are enjoying life with two kids, a new house, and each other!  we continue to try to make the most of every day and enjoy this precious time that. despite the long (sometimes very long) days, we know that these times go by so quickly.  there are days where i wish the kids were older so i could get more done, or we could go out more, or so matt and i could spend more time together.  then i remember that we only get to have this time with our kids once, and that there will be plenty of time for everything else later.  while i can't ever say that i truly love *every* minute, i can say that i enjoy motherhood and the life i have :)

6 weeks

another week gone by, which means my little girl is growing and changing more and more (and also that my maternity leave is now half over! eek!).
samantha is now awake more during the day and seems to be taking more interest in her surroundings.  she now gazes at toys or high contrast objects for long stretches of time, and has moved into the phase of being very interested in our faces.  and while she doesn't seem to notice her big brother too much, she doesn't seem to mind his constant affection for her -- hugs, kisses, pats on the back or bottom, "sharing" of toys (usually cars), and identification of body parts.  that last one is especially cute because he will touch her nose and say "nose, nose" then show us her eyes, ears, hair, toes, etc.  she doesn't seem to mind, and noah seems tickled pink that this little person has body parts for him to identify.
most of sammy's days are spent eating or sleeping, but when she is awake she still enjoys being snuggled up in someone's arms, but is also starting to spend some time on her tummy.  while this usually results in fussiness and frustration, for the first few moments she does pretty well and always amazes me with her head and neck strength.  and i always feel like i'm so old when i look at her lift her head and think "not too long and she'll be crawling!"  spoken like someone who's already had a child, right? ;)
it does go by so fast, though.  to see how much noah has changed in a year and a half, and to see how quickly we have already reached a month and a half with sammy just makes this realization so much more apparent.

5 weeks

nothing special this week in the king household, just still attempting to get into a routine with our sweet little 5 week old.  after settling in more to the new house i think we are starting to get things figured out and the kids seem to be adjusting well.  since matt (unfortunately) isn't usually home for the dinner/bathtime/bedtime routine i've gotten quite accustomed to attempting this on my own.  i won't say it's a great routine just yet, but it's better every day (or night, i guess).
sammy has been incredibly patient with me as i struggle to feed noah, feed her, and get both of them bathed and in bed sometime between 7 and 8 pm.  i never seem to have enough hands, or time, but slowly i think we are figuring out a system that at least works.  for the time being, i feed noah while i bathe sammy in the kitchen sink.  the bath and noah's dinner are usually done around the same time at which point i get noah down from the high chair and he plays while i nurse sammy.  when she's done, i lay her down for the night (in our room, we haven't moved her upstairs yet), then help noah pick up his toys before we head upstairs to start his bedtime routine. if all goes well, sammy is in bed by 7:15 or 7:30, and noah is in bed by 7:45 pm.
sweet sammy has been doing great at night, usually nursing around 7 pm before bed, then not waking again until sometime between 11 pm - 2 am, depending on the night.  if she keeps this up for several more days, i'll probably be able to start pumping which is great news.  now, i don't like pumping, but it does mean a little more freedom for me and a little more bonding time for sammy and matt.  it's a win-win-win :)
also, in relation to sammy's eating habits, i'm happy to report that i no longer (at least for the time being -- don't want to jinx it!) think she has reflux.  after we got settled into the new house sammy has been much better all around: eating better, sleeping better, spitting up less, and getting the hiccups less frequently.  unlike her big brother, we have gotten to the point where i can feed her, burp her, and lay her down for a nap.  and if she does fuss a little, i can pat her back or bottom and she falls right to sleep.  for our poor little noah, that was never the case :(  so we are *very* happy that it doesn't look like we will be fighting that fight this time around.

meeting great-grandma and great-grandpa barak

in other "firsts" news, sammy got to meet her maternal great-grandparents this week.  my mother's parents came to town for a day to see our new house, meet samantha, and spend some time with my parents before my mom & dad went on vacation.  needless to say, sam was a big hit and got lots of love from them.  also, sammy got to take her first real bath this week -- as in not just a sponge bath.  while i could have done this much sooner, i had been holding off until matt was home so he could witness this little milestone (and help with the camera).  it wasn't a big hit with our little one, but part of that was probably because she was hungry, and i can't imagine the sink was that comfy for her.  hopefully she'll enjoy it more as she gets used to it.

during the bath :(
when she's angry that heat rash looks really awful!

after the bath, "why did you do that to me?!"

ready to eat!

4 weeks

it's hard to believe that sammy has been in our lives for a whole month already! this week was spent adjusting to life in our new house and trying to get organized as much as possible.  i couldn't truly anticipate how difficult this would be with two kids (both under the age of two, and one of those needing to nurse around the clock), but this week was made *much* easier by having matt's father and his fiance here this week.  steve and jacquie flew into town at the end of last week and were here to help for the move and were a *huge* help with packing, moving, watching/holding/distracting the kiddos, and even feeding us!  i can't imagine how hard this week would have been without their help!
of course, on moving day we had tons of help that made our move possible.  a special thanks to my friends colston, jerimey, and bobby, and my dad & mom, sister shari and brother jared.  we definitely couldn't have done it without you!
as far as our little girl is concerned, she wasn't too impressed by the move.  we had to be at the house early in the morning so they would turn on the natural gas (to power our stove, hot water heater, etc.).  because we had to be there so early, she was the first to eat in our new house (while i sat on the floor, since we had no furniture yet!), and she snuggled in jacquie's arms or in her bassinet while i started unpacking and organizing things.  while we were at the new house, all those wonderful guys loaded up two trailers (thanks, jerimey!) worth of furniture and boxes and began the real moving.  it was a long day, but a productive one, and now hopefully things will settle down a bit.
sammy's been a little more fussy than she was previously and i can't tell if it's from the move and subsequent stress on the family, or if she might actually have reflux like noah did (Lord, please no!).  only time will tell, so check back soon for more updates!
