september updates

time to catch up for the month of september! my sweet kiddos are growing more and more, and continuing to keep us busy.
noah is a wonderful older brother. he does an excellent job sharing with sam, even if she doesn't necessarily want whatever he is offering her. recently he's been running up to her with toys and saying, "here you go, sammy!" while handing her a car or other item. unfortunately, sometimes she just wants to keep crawling to standing or doing what she's doing and completely ignores the toy. this results in a *very* unhappy noah, who desperately wants to share. i've actually had to explain to him that it's okay if she doesn't want to play with a toy "right now." it's getting better. of all the things i didn't expect about having multiple kids, having them cry because they are trying to share and the other kid isn't taking the toy was not one that i anticipated!
and speaking of the sweet brother, i have found him more than once curled up on the floor in sammy's room. for some reason, he still enjoys sneaking out of his bed at night, but now he sneaks across the hall and closes the door. i have found him snuggled up next to the crib with his blanket and lovey. awwww.
other favorite things for our sweet boy include eating pancakes (a huge favorite!), anything with peanut butter, eggs, sausage, all fruits, and cucumbers. he has also recently figured out his pockets, but can't always operate them alone, so we are frequently asked to assist him put toy cars, acorns, and/or money (fake poker chips) in his pockets for him... then moments later we have to retrieve them, too. he also tells us nearly every day that he wants to "play with his cousins and grandma sharon!" he isn't picky about which cousins, but he knows that they will all offer extra entertainment. mom and dad are just too boring! noah also seems to be enjoying our new church and seems excited about going on sundays. of course, he usually recounts his sunday school class for us by telling us that he ate goldfish -- nothing else. i guess i can just be glad he's enjoying his time there.
other cute things our sweet boy is doing include reading parts of books to us. he does a great job finishing "reading" pretty much any page from any book that we read on a regular basis. he's especially good at dr. suess books and the llama llama books we have, but a new favorite is the story of ferdinand. i love to hear his sweet little voice "read." there are even parts in ferdinand where he knows how the story goes but he substitutes his own words -- there's a part where the men "jump with glee" but noah always reads it as "jump with joy." and another part where the book says, "and all the lovely ladies had flowers in their hair" but instead noah tells me (and it always makes me giggle) "and all the lovely ladies had hair on their heads." :D and speaking of cute, noah has been telling us lately that everything is "cute." i'm not sure where it came from, but he will tell us, "oh, that thing is pretty cute! isn't it so cute, mommy?" or he will refer to anything small as a "baby," i.e. "oh, mommy! look at this baby grape! isn't it so cute? ...i'm gonna eat it!"
our sweet one-year old samantha has been wonderful! she is still practicing walking, i think she has no desire to give up crawling anytime soon, but has been cruising very confidently around furniture and (finally) started walking behind the little push-cart. it was shortly after her birthday when she started using the cart, but now she will walk the entire length of the living room or kitchen behind the cart before finally getting stuck somewhere and, typically, collapsing into a heap of tears because she can't go any further.

she has also begun signing certain words including "please" and "more." this is incredibly helpful! and speaking of food, she's made the complete transition to cow's milk and cups with straws, which is incredibly convenient for us (yay!). she also has let us know that she loves fruit, but loves strawberries the most. she will also chow down on some sausage, turkey, and any kind of crackers, but still will barely touch any kind of eggs -- not a fan! in addition to signing, our sweet daugther has learned to say quite a few words: night-night, uh oh, bye bye, berries, and hot dog. she has also learned how to wave, which i love to see :) and she seems to be developing a real love of reading, not only at bedtime, but during the day she will crawl over to any of the books (hers or ours) and pull them out and spread them all over the floor and turn the pages, pointing out pictures or words. i love it :)

a trip to the dallas zoo!

the week of labor day i scheduled myself a "stay-cation."  with two kids, two FT jobs, and the regular just plan being busy of normal life, it's hard to balance...everything.  so after transitioning to a new job at Las Colinas Medical Center -- a move that allows me to be a little less busy, despite making my commute a bit farther -- i decided it was time to take some time off, and not for maternity leave.  i realized that, other than taking maternity leave, i haven't taken any "real" time off (read: scheduled days off and used PTO) since matt and i went on our honeymoon in december of 2007!
but, being the kind of person i am, i had to make a schedule of things to get done vs. things to do.  we got some home improvement projects done around the house (see the pictures of our newly painted bedroom in this post!) and planned fun activities for the family.  one of the activities included our first family trip to the dallas zoo.

it was warm, but the kids seemed to enjoy it, despite us keeping them out later than usual for naps and such.  we saw a good majority of the zoo and noah enjoyed identifying all the animals.  sam mostly enjoyed riding the in the stroller :)

Home updates

So, mostly for myself, I wanted to chronicle the DIY projects and home improvement tasks we have done around the house since we've moved in.  While I could never capture everything, and don't always remember to take pictures, there are a few changes that I'm pretty pleased with and would like to make note of here.  That said, if you are interested, read on and take a glance at my before and after photos.

Painted the white IKEA bookshelves, so they were a little more "quiet" in our library.  This required buying a special primer that works on laminate finishes, then sanding everything, then painting.  It seemed like it took *forever* but I was pleased with the result and have never regretted spending the time to "upgrade" these shelves.  The plan is to ultimately get nicer shelves, but now there is no reason to rush!

Spray-painted the otherwise lovely flower pots the previous owners left on the front patio.  I had seen what they were supposed to look like in a magazine, and understood that they had passed their prime in their current color.  I bought some good ol' Rust-oleum spray paint and went with simple black.  I was SO happy with the end result, such a statement!  And the color really makes the color of the flowers I planted pop, too!

I also made a growth chart for the kiddos.  I had some old plywood, stain and clear lacquer from the previous owners, and I purchased some black acrylic paint and stencils. I was very pleased with the end result!

I painted an accent wall in Samantha's room.  Her room had been a source of decorating frustration for me because I wanted it to have something "special" and because I had been unable to match the paint color from the paint the previous owners had left.  There were large holes in her wall that had been patched, but remained bright white and obviously unfinished.  I did my best to use some very creative picture hanging to cover what I could, and I had previously made her a canopy, then added a mobile in an attempt to distract from the patched spots.  I later revised the mobile to be much nicer than the original.  I can now say that I'm pretty happy with her room and I don't plan on doing much else to it until she moves to a bigger bed.

Supplies for the canopy and making the original mobile:

The original canopy, without mobile (you can *just* see the patched holes in the walls, they were very obvious in person).

Added the mobile -- I had tried to repurpose some materials and make some stars into flowers, but I was never very satisfied with the result.

Finally, a completed canopy with hooks to keep Sam from pulling it into her crib.  Also, note the much nicer flower balls (what else would you call those things?) instead of the cheap-looking mobile. And you can see my "creative picture hanging" to cover up the spots on the wall.

Noah and Sam get ready to help me paint.

The first color I picked was way to bright, you can see them both here:

I also repainted our room this past week.  It had looked so nice when we walked through the house before we purchased it, but that was with the previous owners' furniture, bedding, and decorations.  With the things I have picked out the walls appeared very orange, and I can't say I was a fan of the purple valances with striped curtains -- although I could tell they were custom ordered and I felt that I *should* like them.  I had also run into the same problem I had with Sam's room -- large patched holes on the walls with no way to match the paint.  I debated for *weeks* over which paint color to go with and solicited advice from decorator friends, family, and friends who I just plain trust.  I eventually ended up going with a chocolate brown color that I feared might be too dark or that might appear purple-ish, but I committed because it seemed nice "enough" and I was ready to be done with the decision.  It also helped that my good friend Kelley was willing to give up her Labor Day to help me do the painting while Matt watched the kids, so I had to commit to *something.*  As we started painting, I realized I actually did love the color, and by the time we were done I was ecstatic!  The room looks so much nicer, and seems more calm, more inviting, and much more "us" (Matt and I).

The other part of the bedroom re-do was to transfer my vinyl stencil from the wall onto a canvas so I wouldn't have to worry about moving it again, and because I didn't want to get rid of it.  The smart thing to do, I've decided, is to apply the vinyl decals to a glass frame, or a canvas instead of directly to the wall, if you ever think you might move them.  Why didn't I think of that in the first place?!  Anyway, I didn't want to spend any more money so I took a canvas picture that I had removed from Sam's room (that I had only ever partially liked) and primed it with the same stuff I used on the IKEA bookshelves.  After that I invested in some white spray paint and painted the canvas before painstakingly transferring each vinyl letter onto the canvas.  It was easy enough to remove and transfer them, the tricky part was making sure they were straight/level on the canvas.  I had some space left at the bottom of the canvas, so I created a stencil for two love birds and stenciled, then painted them on.  The last touch was a small red heart (to tie into the bedroom colors), that I ended up cutting out of scrapbook paper and mod-podging above the birds.  I am happy with the end result.
