alex turns 11

it's true, on the 31st, alex will be a big-time 11 year old! we were there to celebrate with friends and family to a fairy-tale themed party (hence the fairy wings and swords and shields!) on the 29th. everyone enjoyed swimming, spending time with the birthday boy and eating some tasty cake!
happy birthday, alex! you're growing up to be such a cool kid, we can't wait to see what the next 11+ years hold for you!!!

red bull art of can

on my commute to and from children's downtown, i kept seeing advertisements for the "red bull art of can" exhibit at the galleria. being long-time fans of red bull (it's gotten me through many a sleepy night at work, through nursing school, was included in our pre-wedding photos, helped matt survive his qualifying exams and write his dissertation and made all the road-trips to and from ohio possible!), i was intrigued to see what kind of exhibit this really was. i finally remembered to log online and found that it was a free art exhibit showcasing art made from and inspired by red bull. i coordinated with the family and on the 22nd we made the trip to the galleria with my parents and shari to view some truly creative pieces of art.
to see the inspiration behind the work and better understand the rules and process for the exhibit, go to redbullartofcan.com, which also has pictures of all the art, not just the ones i could get decent photos of!

people are so creative....i love it!

life back in texas

intelligent as you might think the two of us are, somehow our moving plans landed us back in texas in the middle of august (read: hell on earth, aka the hottest time of the year). last year we managed to plan the move to ohio right before the winter. and we claim to be "planners?!" needless to say, the weather was not a plus to moving back this time of year, as i had grown quite accustomed to highs in the 80's and lows in the 60's!
despite the weather, we still enjoyed august in texas with the help of some family fun and friend-based distraction.
at the beginning of the month, we got a chance to meet up with friends of ours for a game night, including two of my friends from high school i hadn't seen in *ages* (adrienne had been attending grad school and nini was living in japan for the last year!). we had a great time playing apples to apples, things, and catching up in general.

on the 10th, we got to celebrate with our friend (and "adopted" sister) dana, who had passed her citizenship exam. she is officially a united states citizen!!! way to go dana!!!

later in the week, we spent some time on the lake with my parents, something we never got the chance to do while visiting from ohio because the weather never really cooperated. it was great to be back out on the water and enjoying the heat! the childers kids also showed off their rafting skills and had to show uncle matt and dana "how it's done!"

on the 15th, we celebrated dana's 31st birthday and had a mini going-away party for her. she flew back to germany a few days later, and while we are happy she is enjoying her life there with her boyfriend rudy, we miss her terribly!

happy august, everyone!

maddie's 1st birthday

the backstory...
it was in april that matt and i unanimously agreed to move back to texas, what we couldn't decide was when...simply because that wasn't up to us! the best we could do was to say that we would move back when one or both of us had a steady income/job in texas, which we figured would be sometime in june or july. obviously, that didn't happen. i agreed to start work at children's medical center in the middle of august, which meant we couldn't move too much sooner than the last part of july or early august. the one consideration i had, however, was that we were not going to miss maddie's first birthday party since we were headed this way anyway. after some planning with matt, my parents, my jobs and my sister we figured out a way to accommodate the moving plans with the party.
we arrived back in texas on the 4th and the party was on the 8th. we were fortunate enough to be there to celebrate her entry into this world a year ago on july 31st with the family, cake and the traditional proctor slideshow.
and, of course, the birthday girl was simply adorable! and how could she not be...she's the third child! ;)

happy birthday, miss madeline claire! we love you and wish you many more years of happiness to come!

adios, ohio

after months of planning, debating, coordinating and decision making, we were finally ready to pack up our cute little apartment on candlewick circle and hit the road for southern migration. it was one of those times in life where anticipation makes it feel like time is moving too slowly, but the sheer amount of work to be done makes you wish you could slow everything down just a bit!
i turned in my notice at both jobs and said my final farewell to MCE without much (okay, any) fan-fare. the night was easy and the shift passed quickly...which i've noticed tends to be the case when you know you'll never have to clock in somewhere again! at OSU, the departure was much harder, since i had made many good friends there and they were all very understanding, but sad to see me go. it was hardest to leave behind my friend shaun, who, despite our very different pasts, was like a sister to me and the closest friend i had. she was always able to make me laugh, and made working at OSU something to look forward to 4 days a week. my friend sue is the reason i "survived" my hardest months in ohio at all, because for every sad or home-sick story i had, she could one-up me with a moving story of her own, usually about living in north dakota....in the winter...with 2 small children. after her stories i was always laughing, and realized that i really didn't mind living in ohio at all, and it really wasn't that cold. after all, ohio living doesn't require you to leave your car plugged in or wear ski masks to the grocery store! on my last day at work, my fellow care managers surprised me with a fabulous pizza & salad dinner and a very tasty going-away cake. i will miss those gals!
once the goodbyes had been said, it was time to get to work...on packing! i did much better this time than a year ago, where i had not packed anything before the big move. this time, i had already packed up everything but the essentials by the time my dad, mom and jared flew into town to help with the move. they arrived on july 30th, and we spent the first couple days showing them around the great city of columbus, including a trip to german village, easton mall and tours of our respective work places. after catching up and finalizing our game plan, we got to packing and loading. and after actually acquiring a rental truck (long story...but don't try to reserve a truck from budget!), it took a solid day (nearly 10 hours) to load everything up into the u-haul except for our toothbrushes and a couple of blankets we kept out so we could sleep on the floor that night (oh, and the keurig to make coffee in the morning) needless to say, we were beat!
the next day was solid driving...mom and dad left early in the morning with the uhaul, with matt, jared and i staying behind to turn in the apartment keys and take care of a few last-minute logistics (who was lexi riding with, who was riding with who?). by about 9:30am, we were all on the road, waving goodbye to our life in ohio and the cool summer weather.
our travels took us south through kentucky, tennessee, and arkansas before we finally crossed the border into the lone star state somewhere around 2am. sadly, we still had about another 2 hours to drive before we made it safely to my parents house to sleep for the day! needless to say, by the time we arrived we stumbled into the house and promptly fell asleep...knowing full well that the next whole day would be spent unloading the truck :/
all in all, it was a great trip and i was thankful that there were no major problems and we all made it safely. i got to spend quality time in the car with my brother (who can't take a picture of a "welcome to ______" sign from a moving car to save his life), stop in the thriving metropolis of mumfordville, kentucky, find out that there is no where directly off the highway to get gas and food in memphis, tennessee, and find out from my parents that the roads in arkansas (when driving a 26' u-haul) are actually worse than the roads in ohio.
thank you to everyone who helped us with this move: physically, emotionally or otherwise!
